Local band Lost Keys launches debut EP ‘Revival’

A large crowd gathered at Champions Billiards Sports Bar on Buckeystown Pike in Frederick on Feb. 10 to watch local music act Lost Keys perform a show in support of their debut EP, Revival.

The band, formed in 2013, originally consisting of vocalist and guitarist Trevor Davis, lead guitarist Anthony Sloan, and drummer Jordan Miller. The group originally had intentions of just being a “working band [doing] bar gigs,” in the words of Sloan, but after the addition of bass player Stefan Sandman to the group, they decided to begin writing their own original music.

“We had been playing around with the idea of writing original music, and when we [brought in Stefan], it meshed really, really well and [the music] just sparked ever since,” said Davis.

The band recorded most of their EP at Gypsy Cab Studios, a studio in Frederick owned and operated by Miller, and recorded the drums at Studio 301, also in Frederick, with engineer Matt Kramer.

On the EP, listeners will find a wide variety of instruments and large soundscapes. For the recording process, the band enlisted the help of several musicians, including Alyssa Boxhill and Andrew Nixon, string players from Frederick Symphony Orchestra, Courtney Heimberger on trumpet, backup vocalists Lawren Hill and Zoe Eackles, and Alex Tragert on the organ.

For those who have not heard the Lost Keys before, the band describes themselves as a mix of both old school and new age music, drawing comparisons to the classic rock group, The Allman Brothers, while also citing jazz and Latin influences among others.

“We definitely have an old school vibe to our stuff; I think all of our songs have an old soul,” Miller said. “All of [our eclectic influences] find their way in [our music] without one taking over the other.”

Sandman added that the group is also very dynamic in sound, saying that the group’s music often goes “from very quiet to very loud in the blink of an eye.”

Following the release of Revival, the band hopes to continue writing their new music and releasing a full-length LP soon. Listeners can find the group on Facebook and see the band at 10 p.m. this Saint Patrick’s Day at Cafe Nola in Downtown Frederick.
